Mary Ann McFarland, MS, RD completed her Bachelor of Science Degree at Radford University as a well as Master Degree in Community Nutrition at Virginia Tech. She has worked over 35 years in the food and nutrition field. While attending Virginia Tech, Mary Ann worked as a full time Unit Nutritionist at Shultz Dining Hall and later at Dietrick Dining Hall at Virginia Tech's Culinary Service.

After finishing her Master’s degree, Mary Ann completed the requirements to become a Register Dietitian and has continued as a RD for 30 years. After 14 years in VT Culinary Service, Mary Ann continued her career as a Public Health Nutritionist at Washington County and Bristol, Virginia Health Departments. Four years later, Mary Ann was hired as the Southwest District Area Coordinator for the Family Nutrition Program at Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Mary Ann received the Svoboda Award for Extension Excellence in 2007 for innovative educational programming. Mary Ann has strived to educate, coach, and equip her assigned paraprofessionals and staff with skills to promote their success with targeted low income audiences. During this time, Mary Ann has written and obtained grants to enhance and expand nutrition education programming.
