Summer Internship Program: Wythe County - Position 3 (half-time)


Primary Program Area Focus:   ANR

1. Describe your plans for this internship.  (i.e. What specifically will the intern be doing?)

  • Coordinate the Farming Educational Showcase Serious for the Education of the General Public though the summer of 2017
  • Plan and assist with site preparation, marketing to the general public, and scheduling
  • Prepare Video Documentation to be shared via Social Media
  • Assist with Evaluation of each individual farming highlight and measure awareness change from participants
  • Assist with the program delivery for youth Stockmen’s and Livestock Judging Clinics and Trips
  • Investigate the Livestock Housing and Accommodation needs at the APEX Center
  • Devote time to grant funds investigation geared towards the expansion of the APEX Center
  • Write at least one newspaper feature on the Summer Farming Showcase Series
  • Promote the Wythe Unit through social media

2. Describe the knowledge / skills you expect the intern to gain from this experience.

  • A greater comprehension of how all the disciplines within VCE interact and work towards a common goal
  • Improved marketing concepts pertaining to public awareness and improvements in client contacts
  • Conceptual knowledge of how VCE is an integral part of community and serves as a conduit for information delivery and collaboration
  • Awareness of how VCE is a front door from the University and serves as a local avenue to University Resources
  • Time management and multitasking

3. How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas?

The Wythe Unit ANR Intern will be mainly focused on the creation of a summer series dedicated to bringing nonfarm public on to farms for a “day in the life” series that focuses on educating on the foot and field to fork process and to dispel myths incorrectly disseminated through the general public.  Additionally, the intern will be focusing on a beef showcase educational program that will bring culinary arts programs together in SWVA to showcase beef preparation and the nutritional aspects and variety of preparation options.
