Community Food Security and Food Systems
Virginia Cooperative Extension is working to improve community food security by supporting the growth and development of local food systems. This is accomplished in a number of ways, including:
- Supporting farmers markets in their efforts to increase the availability of fresh and healthy local foods to individuals and families of all income levels and backgrounds
- Introducing children to container gardening as a way to connect growing their own food and eating fresh produce
- Working with community gardens as sources of affordable, nutritious food and opportunities for physical activity
