The Family Nutrition Program has launched a new initiative to facilitate the delivery of SNAP-Ed programs and initiatives that honor the traditions and beliefs of indigenous people and advance nutrition security and health. According to the Indian Health Service, American Indians continue to disproportionately experience disease burden and have lower life expectancy that the general population due to economic adversity. According to a recent report released from the Native American Agriculture Fund and partners, 49% of American Indian and Alaska Natives experienced food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are seven federally recognized tribes in Virginia - Pamunkey Indian Tribe, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Upper Mattaponi, Rappahannock, Nansemond, and Monacan. The initiative will include nutrition education with adults and youth, as well as promoting access to affordable, culturally appropriate, and nutritious foods.
