Virginia 4-H Horse Ambassadors

Community Service Book Drive

Every year at the State 4-H Show, the Ambassadors initiate a statewide horse project Community Service effort. This year the 4-H Horse Ambassadors invite you to join in a statewide Horse Book Drive! The goal is to collect as many horse-subject related books of all kinds, new and used. Please mail your donations the collection site:
Washington County VCE
Attn: Crystal Peek, Extension agent
234 West Valley Street, Suite B
Abingdon, VA 24210

The book drive was inspired and initiated by Audrey Allen’s desire to spread the love of horses through books, combining it to combat the great potential of the COVID-19 slide of young learner’s literacy rates.  All types of horse-related books are being accepted to include picture books, chapter books, fiction and non-fiction, new or used, paperback or hardback! All donations will be used to set up free libraries at various local 4-H offices.  We ask club members to please extend this invitation out to their community and horse friends beyond 4-H! This is a unique opportunity to share the love of horses with reading and help prevent the COVID slide!  Please have your donations arrive no later than Oct. 22 so that we can snap a picture of the donations and report it in the Zoom Awards!

Ambassadors are selected to serve a one year term, beginning September 25th, leading in a variety of outreach and public service capacities, connecting with the community, assisting with 4-H local and District level equine events, meeting with legislators, and representing our program at the state level. In addition, they serve in very important roles at our State 4-H Horse Shows and Educational events. Opportunities are almost limitless as they are encouraged to use this platform, along with their individual skills, passions and talents, to help grow our 4-H Horse Program and the Equine Community. During their term, they will experience leadership trainings, state-wide travel, public speaking opportunities and networking. The Horse Ambassador Program began on September 25, 2017.

If you are interested having an Ambassador at your event or club meeting, please contact the District or Lead Advisor, who will connect you with an Ambassador. For special non-4-H equine or agriculture-related events requesting 4-H Horse Program representation please contact the area District Advisor listed below or the State Lead Advisor, Sandy Arnold for Ambassador support.
