Summer Internship Program: Appomattox County

Primary Program Area Focus: 4-H  

1. Describe the plans for this internship.  (i.e. What specifically will the intern be doing?)


The summer intern will work closely with VCE agents to support local programming. The intern will explore agricultural services offered through VCE with the ANR Agent by attending field visits, understanding soil sample testing, and learning insect and plant identification. The intern will explore positive youth development alongside the 4-H Agent through supporting summer day camps, educational workshops, and the preparations for overnight junior 4-H camp. Additionally, the intern will support the development of joint programs like the Central Virginia Farm Day event which highlights local agriculture while providing educational experiences for local youth and residents at the Appomattox Farmers Market.

2. Describe the knowledge / skills that the intern is expected to gain from this experience.

The intern will develop skills in communication, time management, customer service, public speaking, event planning, program implementation and evaluation. The intern will have opportunities to create program materials (such as flyers, agendas, email reminders, etc.) as well as opportunities to build relationships with stakeholders at various VCE programs conducted by the Appomattox VCE Office. By the end of this internship, the intern will gain confidence in their ability to present themselves professionally, manage multiple project deadlines, think critically to problem-solve as challenges arise, collaborate with diverse team members and volunteers, and take initiative in program implementation.

3. How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas?

By actively engaging in this internship, the summer intern will learn about the breadth of VCE through their work in agriculture endeavors, youth programming, and community events.
