Summer Internship Program: Arlington County - Position 2

Primary Program Area Focus: 4-H

1. Describe your plans for this internship.  (i.e. What specifically will the intern be doing?)

This intern will assist the 4-H Agent to facilitate and administer the summer calendar of youth development programming.

The intern is expected to attend 4-H Camp, which runs overnight June 30-July 4th at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center in Front Royal, Virginia. At camp, the intern will be responsible for teaching a class, providing lodge supervision, and assisting the 4-H agent with other duties as assigned. The intern will also provide administrative support in the weeks leading up to camp. 

In addition, the 4-H intern can expect to facilitate programming with youth around Arlington.  Programs topics may include environmental education, teen leadership, career skills, nutrition, and other subject areas as need arises. The intern may also assist our Financial Program Associate in conducting financial simulations at elementary and middle schools around the County. 

The intern will also provide administrative support to the Arlington unit, attend and support club meetings, manage the website and social media accounts, develop marketing tools, and collaborate with community partners and volunteers.

2. Describe the knowledge / skills you expect the intern to gain from this experience.

The intern who accepts this position will gain program development experience through preparing and facilitating educational programming for youth. He/she will also gain valuable experience in public speaking, program administration, positive youth development, customer service, and working with youth and adult volunteers.

3. How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas?

The intern will collaborate with all of Arlington’s VCE staff, allowing he or she to gain firsthand insight into our Master Gardener, Master Naturalist, Master Financial Volunteer, Master Food Volunteer, and Energy Masters programs in addition to 4-H.
