Summer Internship Program: Halifax County

Halifax County

Primary Program Area Focus: Split 4-H & ANR

1. Describe your plans for this internship. (i.e. What specifically will the intern be doing?)

The Halifax County intern will assist and shadow agents in the field and on projects during the 2019 summer season. Agricultural and Natural Resources experiences will consist of farm consults on topics such as weed and forage ID, Livestock management, and farm marketing inquiries as well as assisting with livestock auctions, Farmer’s Markets, and two crop scouting research projects. Opportunities with youth will include assisting with planning, preparation and implementing residential 4-H camp and day camps, AG field days, and supporting intergenerational technology grant.

2. Describe the knowledge / skills you expect the intern to gain from this experience.

At the completion of the internship the successful candidate will have gained experience in record keeping and business management skills, livestock handling, marketing and public relations, crop scouting and integrated pest management as well as program planning, implementation and evaluation while working with groups and individuals. Soft skills as well as work ethics will be incorporated into the daily duties such as time management and prioritizing

3. How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas?

This internship provides possible experience in the areas of Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4-H Positive Youth Development, and nutrition through shadowing and collaborating with VCE Agents as well as partnering agencies such as the local Soil and Water District, the WE Skelton 4-H Center, farmers’ markets, and livestock associations.
