Summer Internship Program: Wythe County - Position 1

Primary Program Area Focus:   4-H

1. Describe your plans for this internship.  (i.e. What specifically will the intern be doing?)

  • Assist the Unit 4-H Agent with 4-H camp preparation (including assisting with teen leader training)
  • Attend 4-H camp
  • Plan, teach, and evaluate one (1) class during 4-H camp
  • Plan and assist with the one (1) week Healthy Kids-in-the-Kitchen summer day camp
  • Plan, prepare, and assist with the largest fundraising campaign conducted for Wythe County 4-H (selling food during the ten day Chautauqua Festival)
    • This includes attending Food Safety training and creating marketing materials for the 4-H program
  • Plan, prepare and attend the new, five (5) day Citizen Science trip to the Chesapeake Bay for the Teen Club
    • Intern will also be responsible for preparing a presentation to be delivered to the Wythe County Board of Supervisors and Wythe County Public School Board on the benefits of an annual Citizen Science program for 4-H youth in the county.
  • Devote time to grant funds investigation geared towards the expansion of facilities with the 4-H program
  • Conduct at least one (1) educational program in either 4-H, ANR or FCS depending on interns current field of study
  • Write at least one newspaper article in area of expertise
  • Promote the Wythe Unit through improvements in social media efforts

2. Describe the knowledge/skills you expect the intern to gain from this experience

  • A greater comprehension of how all the disciplines within VCE interact and work towards a common goal
  • Improved marketing concepts pertaining to public awareness and improvements in client contacts
  • Conceptual knowledge of how VCE is an integral part of community and serves as a conduit for information delivery and collaboration
  • Awareness of how VCE is a front door from the University and serves as a local avenue to University Resources
  • Time management and multitasking
  • Improved problem solving
  • Improved public speaking and presentation delivery
  • Improvements in team/unit function and goal setting
  • Awareness of local government issues and the ability to gear programs towards situation analysis

3. How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas?

The Wythe Unit Intern will be a 4-H intern.  However, the selected intern will be encouraged to work across ANR, 4-H and FCS programs as well as attending district functions to interact with other disciplines. The selected intern will also be able to experience all three disciplines due to the scheduled 4-H programming being diverse in content area.
